I don’t really know why any of this is such huge news, but everybody is running with it like it’s something huge. Christian Bale has given an interview where he claims (not for the first time, mind you) that this third Christopher Nolan-directed Batman film is his final one. He’s said this several times – he only wanted to do three, Nolan only wanted to do three, and Batman geeks knew – as soon as they heard that Tom Hardy was cast as Bane – that Batman didn’t have many places to go past this third installment. First, Bale’s comments – which include some nice words about Anne Hathaway (insert conspiratorial side-eye here):
Christian Bale’s days as a superhero are over. “I wrapped a few days ago so that will be the last time I’m taking that [Batman hood] off,” The Dark Knight Rises star tells the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “I believe that the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it’s all done. Everything’s finished. It’s me and [director Christopher Nolan] — that will be the end of that Batman era.”
The era began in 2005, when Bale joined forces with Nolan to reinvigorate the flailing franchise, based on a series of graphic novels. (Previous actors who played Batman include Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.) The first film, Batman Begins, earned $372 million worldwide, though its sequel The Dark Knight (costarring the late Heath Ledger) fared much better, earning $1 billion globally.
The Dark Knight Rises features some old characters — Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine) and James Gordon (Gary Oldman) — and introduces some new faces: Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Bane (Tom Hardy).
“In many ways, [Hathaway] has the hardest job,” Bale, 37, says. “There are a number of people who feel that the Catwoman role has been defined previously. So, I always saw Anne’s role as being the toughest job of any of us.”
As for Gordon-Levitt, 30? “Joseph is a very intriguing guy,” Bale says. “He’s somebody who truly seems to love acting. He’s a good, smart guy.”
The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20, 2012.
[From Us Weekly]
So, it’s done. And much like the Jason Bourne films, I think that Nolan and Bale will stick to their guns and refuse to do another film, no matter how much they’re offered (Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon said no to the money as well for a fourth Bourne film). But much like Bourne, the franchise has simply made too much money for too many people, and producers aren’t going to let some artist-types have the final say – not without disinterring the corpse and slapping it around a few times. So even though Bale and Nolan are done and The Dark Knight Rises will probably make a billion dollars easy and everyone will be happy with the Nolan trilogy, somebody will say, “Hey, we should get another director in here and start all over again with a new Batman!” It’s inevitable. So HuffPo asked – Who should the next Batman be? You can see HuffPo’s list here – they have some decent names on the list. But I just have one word for you good bitches: FASSDONG. Michael Fassbender as Batman? OH DEAR GOD YEEEEEEEESSSS. I should mention this too – if Daniel Craig is ever done with James Bond, lots of people want Fassbender for Bond too. I think he might be better as Batman though?

Can you imagine being struck by the sight of yellow cheshire-cat teeth beaming from the batmask?
I totally just imagined it, it looked hilarious XD
Agreed: EW.
Actually, Fassie has neither the teeth nor the LIPS to wear the BatMask — thin-lipped, yellow-teethed BatGuy would put the CGI costs over the top 🙂
LMAO!!! That Fassbender guy is so slimy and gross to me :-/
Hilarious and gross at the same time! LOL
Kaiser your obsession with this guy is getting out of control. :p
i couldn’t agree with you more. Fassbanger official makes my skin crawl, and my stomach to feel sick.
i vote for the end of the franchise.
I don’t get the fassbender thing at all!
Phew, I’m glad ya’ll commented because I was beginning to think that I was the only one!
Come now! Fassbender’s teeth and lips are fine. My how we have been brainwashed by the Hollywood standard chiclet, white (fake) looking teeth.
Hear, hear. I do not understand why a row of white chiclets that look like false teeth has become the Hollywood standard of dental beauty.
We were meant to have ivory coloured teeth. I imagine there must be a lot of anxiety in trying to keep them blindingly white.
Scott Disick?
Totally!
I prefer Fassbender as Magneto
I don’t like him as Batman, so I say thank g_d. Also he says it’s the end of the Batman era like it won’t be redone again in 10 years.
Oh Yes! Bond and Batman…
Sorry Kaiser. He’s already Magneto.
I hope WB would leave it for a while. They can go back to it in another 10yrs like they did with this trilogy.
I’m sure they won’t.
exactly my comment too!
agreeing with the Scott Disik comment….
Gosling could pull of Bruce Wayne
Gosling in a few years perhaps. And although I adore Fassie, I don’t know if I see him as Batman.
If they are really clever they will probably kill “the Batman.” It would be such a smart way to put an end to their trilogy, and it would be extremely difficult for Studio executives to work around it for future re-boots. Also I could totally see Nolan doing that.
And exactly why studio executives, who are in charge of the money and who gets paid, will say “No, you cannot kill Batman”. This film isn’t being produced and edited in an actual batcave; the director/producer have bosses, too.
Idk, I can’t see Jonn Hamm as Batman (lolol at that!). Maybe back when Adam West was Batman and he got injured on set, and the Hamm filled in. Yeah…. maybe.
The Hamm would make a better Superman, actually.
To me, Michael Keaton will ALWAYS be Batman, and Bruce Wayne.
And Matt Damon was NEVER Jason Bourne. Jason Bourne was about 6’1″, had eyes that could be brown, blue, or green; hair that could be blond, brown, or red; and was totally non-descript. (READ THE DAMN BOOKS!)
I agree that Michael Keaton did it for me as Batman.
Agreed. Michael Keaton just had a certain je ne sais quoi about the very essence of both Batman AND Bruce. I can’t explain it, I can’t define it, but he was IT.
*gasp* Could he also have been black??? Idris Elba!! *bites lip*
OMG, Idris Elba!!!!! I’m there! *wants to bite other things!*
I agree – was just telling my bf the other night I think Michael Keaton was the all time best Batman. Although Idris Elba would be an intriguing choice…why couldn’t Batman be black?
I agree re: Michael Keaton; it was something about his demeanor – so quiet and controlled – and I LOVED his lips and voice in the mask.
ETA: But Kim Basinger was a much better romantic foil than Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhaal (shudder) – both horrible choices, IMHO. I couldn’t picture them stirring any romantic feelings in the likes of Christian Bale. He needed a more classically beautiful Rachel Dawes.
Oh yes. Kim Bassinger was awesome in her role. Quiet, contained, reserved…just like Michael Keaton as Batman & Bruce.
Oh yes Keaton was the best. I had such a crush though I was a kid. I don’t think any of these guys would do well as The Bat. I can’t say I have anyone in mind but Gosling looks too short for this part have no idea why maybe ’cause he keeps on pumping his hands and has lost his shoulders along the way, Hamm is a bit old and Fassie well, Magneto or not just won’t work. Other guys on this list are either too pretty, or unknown or boring or not big of a name. And this film needs a name. Director won’t be enough.
RE: Jason Bourne
I enjoyed the Bourne series with Damon BUT I felt they bore little resemblance to the character/story of the books. After exiting the first movie, I fell into conversation with another reader that felt the same way. Don’t you wonder if anyone ever reads these days? I mean something besides Twilight and magazines. It drives me crazy.
i totally agree with you.Michael will always be batman.oh god his eyes the way he talked it just screamed batman.Christian Bale’s batman felt wooden and not realistic to me at least.
Jensen Ackles should be batman. Would have been a better Captain America, though.
J’adore Jensen Ackles, but no.
I know it’s not the exact same thing, but Tobey Maguire as Spiderman? Not sure I would have picked him out to play that role. I’m anxious to see how Andrew Garfield handles it. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine until the role is cast and finished filming.
I think Garfield will be great. I hated Tobey as spiderman. Peter Parker should be thin and tall, not carby faced.
I think Andrew will redefine the role like Bale.
I will say Keaton was a great Batman but what I loved about what Nolan did was that he showed that Batman was a normal guy and displayed the process of how he became to be Batman. Batman wasn’t born with superhero powers. I just absolutely loved the franchise and it is time to end it with Bale & Nolan.
please NOT a reboot by Brett Ratner or not a remake of a Nolan Batman movie!
Bale was the first Wayne/Batman that i liked
I love the Nolan films so far, so I’m glad they’re just going to tell the story they want and be done, rather than drag it out for more money.
I don’t think any of those guys are a great choice. I hope they leave the franchise alone for a while, but I doubt it.
Ben Wyatt! Yay! That was one of my favorite parts of this season of Parks & Rec.
Saw the article, saw the tags & started laughing! How did we know who you would pick?!?! Lol
Of course Fassbender had to be worked into a story that has nothing to do with him. Nobody else should play Batman. The franchise has been beaten to death, and Gotham is now crime free.
and it’s nice to know they casted the best actress in screen test for Catwoman because i really don’t buy Anne Hathaway as Catwoman(Pfeiffer was so good )and Hathaway has the worst job in DARK KNIGHT RISES
Instead of continuing the traditional Batman franchise, I wish they would do a movie based on the Batman Beyond cartoon. I loved that show and it was cool to see Bruce Wayne as the mentor, plus Max was my favorite character (knowing Hollywood the’d probably make Maxine Caucasian).
How about no more effing Batman? Is this stupid funnybook such a staple in the culture that there always has to be a Bat? Feh!
It’s just that Hollywood either has no new ideas, or refuses to invest in any new ideas, instead choosing to trot out such tripe as… a Footloose remake. Or remakes of Conan the Barbarian, Fright Night, The Thing, Straw Dogs (?!? – bad, bad idea). Or how about “Fast Five”? Or the Planet of the Apes reboot? Or the Spiderman reboot of a fairly recent reboot?
!!!
I thought “Straw Dogs” was baffling, too.
I have never liked any superhero films until I saw this trilogy, as my fantasy husband (Bale) was starring I watched Batman Begins, purely for hot guy in spandex reasons and absolutely LOVED it and the sequel. I cannot wait for the last instalment but will also shed a tear as it will be the last time I see Bale in a sexy batsuit!
OMG- for me, there will never be enough Batman! Bale, hands down, is my fav Batman. Fassie as Bats? No. *shudder* Don’t know who should be the next Batman (it’s inevitable that there will be more movies-just look at Spidey), but it ain’t Fassie…
This Fassbender crap is getting really f’n annoying.
I agree.
yes! thank you. he’s a scary f–ker. even more so than bale
In total agreement….I dont get this fascination with Fassbender. He just isnt that hot anyways! Meh.
I don’t think he’s ugly or scary, and he’s a good actor. I’m just so damn sick of Kaiser bringing him up in practically every post, especially given his sketchy treatment of and taste in women.
Fassbender would rock as Batman!
the best batman was michael keaton tbh
Kaiser, I’m with you!
Fassbender should give me some hot, smoldering, gingery love. He is…soulful.
Did anyone else catch the movie Jane Eyre that came out this year? Fassbender as Rochford was amazing. I rented it yesterday and already watched in three times. Shut up.
In that top pic Christian Bale looks like he got tits!!! Yawn.
On a totally diffrent note, im so hooked on this f*cking website it isnt even funny. I need rehab!!!
Same here!
I tried staying away a few days ago..i only lasted a few hours
I want Batman dead.
Macaulay Culkin for Batman! (I keed, I keed!) Don’t get the Fassbender Fassination (ha) AT ALL.
yuck. I like fassbender but not as my beloved batman.
Neither Gosling or Fassie would take on this role after Bale, he is too hard of an act to follow. Plus their careers are going great…they don’t need this for a boost and it would be too much of a risk if they failed.
If they reboot I think they will go much younger.
lets have the Hamm to be the next batman..with lots of nude scenes!!!
Fassie has a new interview!
http://www.redeyechicago.com/entertainment/movies/redeye-qa-shame-star-michael-fassbender-and-directorcowriter-steve-mcqueen-20111123,0,6806396.story
Thanks! Great read as always, funny. Although I know Michael is great friends with Steve, I must say I don’t like that Steve is impatient it makes him look like a jerk. As long as it doesn’t rub off on Fassie! 🙂
NOT Fassbender, He is destined for Bond Greatness! Sure some of you can say he can do both, but I don’t think with the shooting schedules that will be possible. Plus we still want him to do great dramas which he is wonderful in. Although I love Batman (DC geek), this needs to be given a break. Bale in my opinion is the best Batman there has been. Reading the Batman series in the 90’s (dark and intense) I loved this Nolan series the best.
Wow, I’ve almost forgotten how good looking C.B. is. More pictures please.
who should replace him?
